We’re doing things differently
The Business Improvement Group has a fresh take on doing business. We’re driven by two basic principles: fairness and innovation.
At BIG we firmly believe that what goes around comes around. That’s why we’re 100% committed to treating the people we work with fairly – that includes our clients, our suppliers and our staff.
By treating people well we aim to build long term relationships. When our suppliers find they’re treated fairly by us, they do good work for our clients. When our clients know they can trust our services, they want to stay with us. It’s a three-way mutual benefit.
We’re also constantly looking for new and better ways to do business. We actively encourage our team at BIG to think creatively and suggest new ideas. If the ideas make sense we’ll try them, whether it’s saving clients money by being smart about our processes or offering original new services to solve our clients’ problems.
We offer a fresh approach – with the experience to back it up.
The origins of BIG
BIG’s origins lie in a 50-year, three-generation family business serving small and medium sized businesses.
Our founder, James Birrell, worked in the family business for many years, not only learning how to deliver essential services to customers but also gaining an understanding of what makes small businesses tick.
Increasingly James felt the urge to innovate in business – to give customers a better service by finding original approaches that the established players just weren’t interested in trying. He was also driven by a strong sense of fair play. He knew from his own experience that small businesses don’t get the respect they deserve.
That’s when he decided it was time to go his own way and start his own business.
Our philosophy
Small businesses face a constant struggle to survive, with pressures from many different directions.
Very often they are unable to get the support that larger businesses take for granted and find themselves vulnerable as a result.
At BIG we find that unacceptable.
We believe that if smaller businesses join together to buy services, they can get a better deal. It’s a matter of strength in numbers.
The basis of this approach is fairness and the driving force is innovation.
The BIG model
We treat our clients and suppliers as our partners. It’s why we use a membership model: membership means you’re committed to the benefits you get, and it means we’re committed to making your membership worthwhile.
We see this as a fairer and more sustainable system than trying to extract the maximum profit from each customer.
Membership offers buying power and the ability to compare different providers, combined with the benefit of professional advice and expertise to underpin your choice.
